Acupuncture Q & A
What Is Acupuncture Treatment?
Acupuncture is a type of treatment that originated in China more than 3,000 years ago. Acupuncturists use extremely slim needles, placing them in key areas on the body to alleviate pain in a natural way. The needles create a balance in the body’s energy, which allows the body to return to its optimal pain-free state.
There are several types of acupuncture. In moxibustion, moxa taken from dried mugwort warms key areas and helps with smooth qi energy flow. In auricular acupuncture, points on the outer ear are stimulated for healing. In cupping therapy, suction is used to help stimulate blood flow and promote healing.
At Complete Wellness in NYC, we are proud to offer natural, holistic pain relief and healing through acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy, and more. We have been serving Manhattan for nearly 40 years.
Pulled muscles are a common complaint we receive from New Yorkers. Our team of experts can help reduce the pain of a muscle strain, and accelerate recovery.
A pulled muscle or muscle strain can be caused by:
1. Not stretching
Not stretching properly before exercise or participating in physical activity.
2. Incorrect physical activity
Doing an exercise you are not used to or participating in a physical activity that is out of your comfort zone.
3. Inadequate warm-up
Not warming up before strenuous physical activity can cause tears within the muscle fibers due to insufficient blood supply.
4. Falling
Falling or being hit in a particular area can cause a tear within the muscle fibers. This is especially common when the muscle is not flexible enough to absorb the impact of the fall.
5. Lack of proper conditioning
When certain muscles are used too little or not conditioned, they become weak and prone to injury.
A Chiropractor can help with a pulled muscle by
1. Realigning the spine and pelvis
The chiropractor may realign your spine and pelvic area to reduce pressure on the muscles that connect to these areas.
2. Active release technique (ART)
The ART technique is used to lengthen, remove restrictions in soft tissue and to release painful adhesions. This increases blood flow and flexibility. The ART helps rehabilitate injuries by applying the precise amount of tension needed for muscular release without overstretching or adding stress to surrounding muscles or tendons.
3. Myofascial release
The chiropractor applies pressure to your muscles while moving your joints through their full range of motion. This helps to reduce the stiffness and pain caused by spasms in your muscles.

Other frequently asked questions we get about pulled muscles:
How long will it take for a pulled muscle to heal?
An untreated muscle strain can improve on its own but it may takes weeks or even months. If receiving care, it can heal within a few days, depending on the severity and location of the strain.
Can you run with a pulled muscle?
It is not recommended that you run while experiencing a strain, but if it is minor, you can attempt light jogging. When the pain subsides, you may be able to return to running.
Can you lift weights with a pulled muscle?
A strain can increase your risk of further injury when engaging in strenuous activity, including lifting heavyweights. You may attempt very light exercises such as walking or using low resistance machines.
Can CBD help with muscle strain?
CBD or cannabidiol is one of the active ingredients in hemp plants. CBD may help with inflammation and relieve pain, but there is no scientific evidence that it can heal a pulled muscle.
